St Margaret’s Church, Lee is an original plein air painting created during a summer course with Blackheath Conservatoire, led by artist Alex Pemberton.
The group was due to meet outdoors to paint together, but on this occasion I could not find them and ended up painting the church on my own. It felt quite daunting at first, especially because of the architectural structure of the building, which was not something I had tackled before in this way.
I began the painting on location, working directly from life and trying to capture the warmth of the stone, the rhythm of the arches and towers, and the quiet atmosphere of the church. I later brought the piece back to my studio, where I added a little more detail while keeping the freshness of the original plein air study.
This is a one-off original painting, ideal for anyone with a connection to Lee, Blackheath, Greenwich, South East London, or historic English church architecture.
