This small piece was painted during my “Flowers in Different Media” class with artist Sophie Knight at the Blackheath Conservatoire. For this session, I chose to work with acrylics, exploring how the medium’s bold opacity and layering possibilities differ from watercolours.
The subject — a simple cluster of pansies — is one I’ve seen interpreted by many artists, including a version by Christina Dowdy, whose study caught my attention. I believe it’s a classic and much-loved motif, making it a great exercise in observing colour relationships and brushwork.
My version focuses on capturing the velvety texture and vibrant contrast of the pansies while experimenting with freer strokes and the interplay of light and shadow — a joyful study in colour and form.
A great painting for any room in the house, that will transport you to your mountain favourite place, each time you see it! Can you imagine it in your walls?
