Original Watercolour – Blackheath Village Meets the Heath, London
An original watercolour painted in my A3 sketchbook, capturing one of my favourite views in Blackheath, Southeast London.
The painting looks from the end of Tranquil Vale in Blackheath Village towards the open Heath and All Saints’ Church, with the distinctive church spire rising in the background.
In the foreground is The Bookshop on the Heath, Blackheath’s long-established second-hand bookshop, which has been part of this corner of the village for many years.
I particularly wanted to capture the character of this very recognisable part of Blackheath: the shops, period buildings and traditional street lamps of the village, and then, almost immediately beyond them, the wide open space of the Heath.
Blackheath is also part of my own London landscape. Having lived in Southeast London for many years, these are streets and views I know well, rather than somewhere I have simply visited. This watercolour is part of my collection of original paintings and sketches inspired by places that have been part of my travels and my life.
Painted by hand in watercolour, the work retains the spontaneity and small imperfections of an original sketchbook painting. There is only one original.
