Description
This oil painting depicts Castel Sant’Angelo, one of Rome’s most iconic and layered monuments, painted after my visit to the city in December 2025 with my eldest son.
Castel Sant’Angelo holds a personal significance for me: it was the first monument I ever visited in Rome, during my honeymoon many years ago. Returning to it years later, under a luminous winter sky, felt both familiar and newly revealing. On that day, the light was exceptionally clear, and the white marble angels along the bridge seemed to glow, their presence catching and holding my attention.
What draws me repeatedly to Castel Sant’Angelo is its powerful structure — solid, circular, and grounded — contrasted with the delicacy and symbolism of the angels that surround it. In this painting, I focused on the interplay between architectural mass and light, using oil paint to build depth, warmth, and subtle tonal variation across the stone surfaces and sky.
This work is part of my ongoing exploration of places that carry personal and historical resonance, translated through painterly mark-making and colour.
