This painting was created during Sophie Knight’s floral painting course at the Blackheath Conservatoire, where we explored expressive, intuitive approaches to flowers inspired by the work of Anne Blockley.
Working in watercolour, I experimented with Blockley’s loose, atmospheric style — allowing pigments to bleed, granulate, and drift into one another. The intention was not to capture botanical precision, but rather the spirit of wildflowers: their movement, spontaneity, and the fleeting impressions they leave in light and colour.
The luminous white blooms emerge from a tapestry of warm ochres, purples, greens, and cobalt accents, creating a soft interplay between structure and abstraction. Instead of defining every petal, the composition relies on suggestion, letting the viewer’s eye complete the forms and textures.
As this piece is a study — focusing on technique, exploration, and artistic learning — it is offered at a lower price. It’s a lovely opportunity for collectors who appreciate expressive, loose watercolours and botanical subjects with emotional energy.
