This painting is a study after Édouard Manet’s “The House at Rueil” (1873), a work I’ve long admired for its light, colour, and quiet atmosphere. I began this piece during my oils class with Alex Pemberton at the Blackheath Conservatoire, and later completed it in my studio.
It was both a technical and emotional exercise — learning from Manet’s confident brushwork and subtle play of shadow while exploring how to make the composition my own. I was especially drawn to the way he painted the dappled light filtering through the trees, softening the geometry of the house and giving it life.
This study reflects my continued journey of learning through observation and reinterpretation, connecting with the masters while developing my personal voice in oils.
