This still life of autumn leaves was painted during my “Painting Flowers with Diverse Media” class with artist Sophie Knight at the Blackheath Conservatoire. I wanted to explore how watercolour could express the richness and fragility of fallen leaves — the transition between colour and decay that defines autumn.
Working directly from observation, I focused on capturing the subtleties of texture and tone, layering transparent washes to bring out the reds, golds, and ochres that mark the season. Each leaf felt like a small study in impermanence — vibrant yet fleeting.
It’s a quiet, meditative piece that reflects my ongoing journey of learning how to use watercolour with freedom and sensitivity, allowing pigment and water to echo nature’s own rhythm.
