This portrait is a study created during my oil-painting class taught by Alex Pemberton, and it represents a very special milestone for me: my first portrait in oils.
Inspired by Antonello da Messina’s iconic Il Condottiere, I focused on understanding the structure of the face, the subtle planes of light and shadow, and the quiet intensity of the sitter’s gaze. Unlike my landscape and floral work, portraiture asked me to slow down, to observe more deeply, and to translate expression through careful, layered brushwork.
The dark background enhances the model’s features — the thoughtful eyes, defined cheekbones, and quiet determination — while the soft transitions in the skin tones reflect the classical approach of the original. Though this is a study, it carries my own interpretation, shaped by the learning process and the discovery that comes with tackling a subject both historical and human.
As a first portrait, this piece is offered at a study price, making it a meaningful work for collectors who appreciate classical references, learning pieces, and the evolution of an artist’s practice.
