This piece was created during a flower-painting course with the wonderful artist Sophie Knight, where the focus was on capturing delicacy, luminosity, and the ephemeral nature of petals.
Working in soft pastels, I pushed myself outside my usual approach. Instead of building depth and contrast early — my normal instinct — I had to start much lighter, laying down translucent, almost weightless layers to express the fragility and softness of peonies. Every mark needed to be gentle and intentional, allowing the textures to remain airy, almost breathing on the surface.
The dark, muted background enhances the bloom of the petals, letting the cool whites, blush pinks, and subtle violets glow in contrast. Despite the richness of the forms, the overall mood remains tender — a study in fleeting beauty and controlled restraint.
