Painted en plein air on a soft grey afternoon, this study captures the Hare & Billet pub, one of Blackheath’s most recognisable and beloved landmarks. Created during my class with artist Alex Pemberton at the Blackheath Conservatoire, this piece reflects my growing practice of painting directly from observation and responding intuitively to light and atmosphere.
The brushwork is loose and spontaneous, echoing the changing weather and quiet charm of the scene. Rather than focusing on detail, I aimed to convey the mood of the day — calm, familiar, and slightly nostalgic, as the pub’s warm tones stood out against the muted sky.
A lively, intimate plein air painting celebrating the everyday character of Blackheath.
A great painting for any room in the house, that will transport you to your mountain favourite place, each time you see it! Can you imagine it in your walls?
