The Lychgate at St Margaret’s Church, Lee is an original oil painting on canvas board, painted plein air during a summer course with Blackheath Conservatoire, led by artist Alex Pemberton.
This painting was made in the same setting as my earlier view of St Margaret’s Church, but this time I was able to work alongside the group. I focused on the church lychgate, a small but very evocative structure traditionally found at the entrance to a churchyard.
A lychgate was historically the place where the dead were placed in their coffins before being taken into the burial ground. I was drawn to the quiet character of this one, with its turquoise-painted wood, flowers, surrounding trees and sense of history.
Painted outdoors from life, the piece keeps the freshness and immediacy of a plein air study, while also capturing the slightly mysterious atmosphere of this corner of St Margaret’s Church in Lee, South East London.
This is a one-off original oil painting, ideal for anyone with a connection to Lee, Blackheath, Greenwich, South East London, historic churches or English churchyard architecture.
