Oil painting inspired by a fleeting moment in the Italian Dolomites
There are moments in the mountains that feel almost staged — as if the weather pauses just long enough to reveal something extraordinary.
This painting is based on one of those moments.
During a summer stay in Madonna di Campiglio, at the Hotel Hubertus, the weather had turned unsettled. Clouds had rolled in, softening the landscape and muting the colours of the valley. We were sitting quietly in a corner of the bar, looking out towards the end of the valley in the direction of Pinzolo, with little expectation that the view would change.
And then, almost without warning, the cloud cover lifted just enough.
For a brief moment, the peaks in the background caught the light — not fully revealed, but illuminated in fragments through moving cloud. It wasn’t a clear day, and that is precisely what made it special. The light was diffused, shifting, and impossible to hold onto.
That was the moment I wanted to recreate.
Rather than painting a perfect postcard view, this piece focuses on the contrast between shelter and exposure: the warmth of the alpine buildings in the foreground, the dense greens of the trees, and beyond them, the mountains emerging through cloud and light.
It is a painting about waiting, watching, and catching something that only lasts a few minutes in the mountains.

A note on the piece
