This delicate watercolour study of a lily pad and its blooming flower was created during the Painting Flowers with Different Media course taught by artist Sophie Knight at the Blackheath Conservatoire.
Working with transparent washes and layered colour, I focused on capturing the softness of the petals, the variation within the deep pink bloom, and the calm reflections across the surface of the water. The gentle movement of the lily pads brings a sense of tranquility, while the play of light creates subtle depth throughout the composition.
As a study, the piece reflects spontaneity, observation, and experimentation — an exploration of botanical forms through fluid brushwork and shifting tones.
