This piece is a study in watercolour and ink, inspired by a painting from Country Landscapes in Watercolour by John Blockley — an artist my professor, Sophie Knight, first introduced me to during my watercolour classes at the Blackheath Conservatoire.
For this work, I experimented with Blockley’s technique of subtraction, beginning with rich, dark washes and gradually lifting colour from the paper to reveal lighter tones and textures. I was drawn to the expressive energy of his style and wanted to explore how to balance structure with spontaneity.
I particularly love how the warm yellow foreground contrasts with the cooler tones of the old stone cottages, creating a sense of light and warmth even on a muted, overcast day.
A personal study that reflects both experimentation and admiration — a small step in my continuing journey of learning from great watercolour masters.
A great painting for any room in the house, that will transport you to your mountain favourite place, each time you see it! Can you imagine it in your walls?
